Board Members
The 2011 Library Board
LUCY CAYUELA, the current Board Chair, was appointed to the Board in January 2008. Born in Mexico City, Lucy worked as a lawyer before moving to Canada in 1996. Unable to practice law in Canada, Lucy trained as a Legal Assistant and worked in that area up to 2003. She is now a full-time mother to her two boys: Emilio and Marc. Lucy is interested in the non-profit sector and has taken courses in community development and non-profit management. A resident of the District of North Vancouver and of Canada for the past six years, Lucy is grateful to be able to give back to her community. Lucy is an alternate for Carisbrooke Elementary School’s Student Planning Council, and was appointed last year as Secretary to the Carisbrooke Parent Advisory Council (CPAC). Lucy serves on the Board’s Human Resources Committee.
AREEF ABRAHAM was appointed to the Board in January 2007. Areef is the co-founder and co-owner of Quality Program Services, which specializes in the planning, development, implementation and management of energy efficiency programs. His organization works collaboratively with governments and utilities to create greener communities for tomorrow. A resident of the District for 17 years and an avid library user, he believes that libraries play an important and often underestimated role in the well-being of communities. Areef serves on the Board’s Advocacy Committee.
COLLEEN DRAIN was appointed to the Board in January 2010. Colleen brings a broad range of professional experience to the Board including over 20 years of experience in health care administration and business consulting. A resident of the District since 2005, Colleen believes the importance of literacy to everyday lives cannot be understated and the Library plays an important role in creating opportunities to learn for all members of the community. Colleen is one of the Board’s Co-Vice Chairs, and serves on the Board’s Finance and Human Resource Committees.
HELIO LOPES DA COSTA Jr. was appointed to the Board in January 2004. He is trained as a librarian, and has worked in the technical services area of the libraries in the Burnaby School District and the North Vancouver School District. He is presently working as a public servant in the benefit administration area of Veteran Affairs Canada. He is passionate about the role of the library as a partner in every citizen's life. He currently serves on the Board’s Human Resources Committee, and is the Board's representative to InterLINK.
ROBIN HICKS is the current Council Representative on the Library Board. Elected to Council in 2005 and 2008, Robin Hicks has lived in Lynn Valley since 1978. He is married with three adult children and three grandchildren all living on the North Shore. Councillor Hicks has a lengthy history of community service including acting as treasurer for Silver Harbour Seniors Centre and the Lynn Valley Community Association. With an extensive background in accounting and finance, Hicks has lectured on government finance at Capilano University, the Government Finance Officers Association and the Municipal Administration Training Institute. Councillor Hicks' qualifications include a degree in Physics and a chartered accountancy designation. His business background includes fifteen years in audit and industry, and twenty years in local government. He serves on the Board’s Infrastructure and Finance Committees.
FIONA KELLY was appointed to the Board in January 2011. Fiona has lived in Lynn Valley since August 2009 when she arrived in Canada from London, UK with her husband and two teenaged sons. With an interest in people and a background in teaching, coaching and business, Fiona currently works as an administrator. As a lifelong library user, Fiona believes that a good Library enhances the life of every citizen. Fiona serves on the Board’s Advocacy Committee.
KEN LIM was appointed to the Board in January 2011. He has a multi-faceted communications background. His experience has included being an account director, copywriter, graphic designer, photographer and running his own business. Volunteer positions have included being chair of the Arts and Culture Commission of North Vancouver and editor-designer of the FCC BC newsletter. He has also volunteered for the Red Cross and the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District). Ken and his family have lived on the North Shore for over nine years. He has a CD of his own songs and a personal website (www.kenlim.com). Ken serves on the Board’s Advocacy Committee.
MIKE MCGRAW was appointed to the Board in January 2011. As an active community member and supporter of public education in North Vancouver, Mike currently serves as Chair of the North Vancouver Parent Advisory Council, and on the North Vancouver Outdoor School Advisory Committee. Mike also serves on many other School District committees including the President’s Council. Returning to North Vancouver in 2008, Mike has resided in the District for 13 years. He is a start-up management consultant and owner of an interactive digital media company. He brings 23 years of entrepreneurial leadership in start-up development and governance, strategic planning and visioning, product management, marketing, sales and finance. Mike serves as the chair of the Board’s Infrastructure and Advocacy Committees.
FRANK SULLIVAN was appointed to the Board in January 2010. Frank has been a District resident since 1989 and believes that libraries should be a focal point of communities. He is married with two teenaged sons and has been employed by a major investment dealer since 1993. Experienced in the management and financing of public companies, Frank holds degrees in economics and management and is a Member of the Certified Management Accountants of BC. Frank one of the Board’s Co-Vice Chairs, and he serves on the Board’s Finance Committee.
