Beau Brummell

If you are a lover of all things Regency, then you might already know who Beau Brummell is. If not, Brummell is the man who transformed men’s fashion in the Regency Era. Prior to him, men, known as fops, dressed in tights and wore wigs and facial powder. His idea was to simplify men’s dress, to wear trousers, and to develop the suit. This was a truly remarkable change at the time.

Originally broadcast on British television, this production is a pleasure to watch, with James Purefoy a perfect Brummell. As the story opens, the Prince Regent (Hugh Bonneville) has developed a friendship with him which heightens Brummell’s fame. As the story progresses, though, Brummell is pulled into the crowd that Lord Byron (Matthew Rhys) moves in, which, along with his gambling addition and failure to pay his debts, leads to him fleeing to France and to his ultimate demise.
An enjoyable view for any period drama fan.
